The areas around the island are surrounded by volcanic rock, and so the climate is warm and dry. The longest point on the island is Diana’s Peak, which is the first national park on the island. The national bird of the island is Saint Helena Plover, which has legs similar to a wire. It appears on the island flags and also the coat of arms.

Saint Helena demographics 

The island was first taken over by British settlers. The people living now are the descendants of the British planter, soldiers, and also slaves. The citizens in the island got the citizenship of British Overseas Territories. There were also emigrants during the time of post-Napoleonic-wars. Many saints went to places such as South Africa, Britain, and Australia. But now the population is increasing again because many are coming back.

Most of the population on the island follows the Anglican denomination. There are also Roman Catholics, The Salvation Army, Baptists, New apostolic churches and Jehovah’s witnesses. It has got the highest ratio of Jehovah’s witnesses than any country.

The executive authority in the island is Queen Elizabeth. The UK handles defense and foreign affairs.

The island is known to have a mono-crop economy. It is done based on New Zealand Flax cultivation. The island’s economy is now weak and is fully aided by the British government. The public sector is the dominating factor of the economy.
