Niue Population: 1,622

Niue is an island country with a land area of 259 km2, located in the South Pacific Ocean. New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands are found in the vicinity of this island. It has a common name, “The Rock,” and is the world’s largest coral islands.

In 2003, Niue provided free wireless internet to every resident of the island, becoming the world’s first ‘Wi-Fi nation.’

In 1960, the population of Niue was 4,826. By the end of 1990, it has reduced to 2,329, which is 51.7% decrease in growth rate. Since then, the population is seen to possess a negative trend until today. Such a decrease trend might be due to an increase in the number of emigrants in the past years.

The political framework of Niue is democratic, dependent on a parliamentary representative. Here the Chief Minister is the head of the government. Though it is associated with New Zealand, the internal affairs are not under their control. New Zealand controls only external affairs.

Niue Economy

Geographic isolation, few resources, and a small population are few of the reasons for the economy’s suffering. Subsistence gardening is the method followed in the agricultural sector, and few cash crops are also grown for export. Postage stamp sales are another source of revenue from foreign collectors. To increase GDP, the country is developing its tourism sector.
