Laos is located at the heart of the Indochinese peninsula, sharing its borders with Burma, Cambodia, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. It can be said that Laos is the only landlocked country present in Southeast Asia. The country is highly mountainous and thickly forested. The Mekong River forms a huge part of the western boundary shared by Thailand. The total land area of the country is 230,800 km2.

The ethnic groups present are Lao 53.2%, Khmou 11%, Hmong 9.2%, Phouthay 3.4%, Tai 3.1%, Makong 2.5%, Katong 2.2%, Lue 2%, Akha 1.8%, and other 11.6%.

Laos Religion & Politics

The majority of the population, about 64.7%, follow Theravada Buddhism. This has coexisted peacefully from the day of its introduction into the country alongside with the local polytheism. 1.7% are adherents to Christianity, and 31.5% belong to others that also include the traditional practices.

Politically speaking, Laos is the only socialist state that openly endorses communism.

Laos Economy

The rice cultivation accounts for 20% of the country’s GDP and raises the percentage of employment to 73%. In recent times, the country is facing a persisting current account deficit and increasing public debt. The economy is dependent on natural resource exports.
