Guyana is a country of South America present in the northern mainland. It is the only country in South America where the English language is spoken. Culturally it is considered to be a part of the Anglophone-Caribbean sphere. It shares borders with the Atlantic Ocean, Brazil, Venezuela, and Suriname. With an area of 215,000 km2, the country is the third smallest sovereign state on the mainland after Uruguay and Suriname. Other than the official language English, the majority speak Guyanese creole as a first language.

Guyana Population History

In 1955, the population of Guyana was just 482,555. Since the majority of the country’s area is a tropical rainforest, low population densities are seen. Only a small increase could be seen in the following years. Slow growth is partly due to the emigration of natives.

On the advice of the cabinet, the President can exercise his executive power. Legislative power is given to both the President and the National Assembly of Guyana.

In recent times, moderate economic growth is seen in Guyana that is based on agriculture and extractive industries. The economy is dependent on such exports representing more than half of the country’s GDP. In the future, Guyana plans to become a petroleum producer for the economic welfare of the country.
